Headfort Foundation, a team of female lawyers dedicated to reducing prison overcrowding in Nigeria by offering free legal services to wrongly incarcerated inmates, conducts monthly visits to the Nigerian Correctional Service. During these visits, they take on cases for indigent inmates and represent them in court.
Today, Al Jazeera visited Ikoyi Prison in Lagos with Headfort Foundation’s lawyers. They interviewed several inmates whose cases are still pending in court. The lawyers shared the difficulties they encounter due to Nigeria's sluggish justice system but remain undeterred in their mission to alleviate the severe overcrowding in Lagos and Nigerian prisons overall.
