David, a caterer from Kogi State, faced a life-altering ordeal in May 2022 when he unknowingly bought a stolen phone for 25,000 naira. Unaware of the phone's illicit origins, he was arrested at his home in Agege and taken to Ogba police station, where he spent a month in custody.
During one of her court visits, our lawyer, Thecla Onuagu, met David and was deeply moved by his plea for legal representation. Committed to clearing his name and seeking justice, she took on his case.
As court proceedings dragged on with multiple adjournments and no witnesses available, the complainant eventually informed the court that he no longer wished to pursue the case, as the actual thief had already been apprehended.
Thecla Onuagu requested the case be dismissed, and on December 20th, 2022, her request was granted, leading to David’s discharge from all charges.
David’s story is more than a legal battle; it reflects the struggle of an individual who was falsely accused and spent 7 months in custody, separated from his family and livelihood. It underscores the critical need for due process and a fair legal system.
