Ibrahim, a 45-years old firewood seller in Ado-Ekiti, was arrested on February 26, 2024, for allegedly cutting wood without the owner's consent. On February 28th 2024, despite claiming he had permission and also paid the security guard N2000,he was arraigned on a 3-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, and stealing. He was granted bail of N200,000 with 1 surety(who must be the seriki Hausa) but Due to financial constraints, Ibrahim couldn't meet the bail requirements and was remanded in prison.
While in prison, his health began to deteriorate, the correctional centre officers informed our lawyer of his sickness, our lawyer then applied for an expedited hearing.
On September 6, 2024, the prosecutor reported that the nominal complainant had relocated to Lagos and all effort to get him to come to Ado Ekiti was in vain.
Considering Ibrahim's health and the lack of witnesses, our lawyer applied for the case to be struck out, so that he can seek medical attention.
After seven months in prison without trial, our lawyer’s application was granted and Ibrahim was released into the care of the Hausa community to enable him receive medical attention.
Ibrahim’s plight highlights the importance of having adequate health care support in the correctional facilities and legal support for those in need. Headfort Foundation for Justice is dedicated to helping individuals like Ibrahim who face unjust treatment.
